by Sara Currier | February 27, 2025

Stephanie Hopkin plays a pivotal role at Destination Northern Ontario as the Senior Coordinator of Product Development, Marketing & Communications.
Stephanie's journey began with her studies in technical writing and literature at the University of Western Ontario, equipping her with a unique blend of communication skills and a strong foundation in critical thinking. Upon completing her degree, she returned to her roots in Sault Ste. Marie, where she launched her professional career with the Ministry of Natural Resources. Her passion for public service led her to a new role as Public Relations and Communications Coordinator in the Mayor’s Office of Sault Ste. Marie.
In 2015, Stephanie took on a new challenge with Destination Northern Ontario, an organization dedicated to promoting the region’s tourism, culture, and economic growth. As Senior Coordinator for Product Development, Marketing & Communications, she plays a pivotal role in coordinating and overseeing multi-faceted marketing initiatives across Northern Ontario, managing a substantial annual budget of approximately three million dollars. Her strategic oversight has been instrumental in elevating the profile of Northern Ontario’s tourism and business sectors, helping to shape its identity on a broader scale.
This past year, Stephanie worked extensively on fostering partnerships with stakeholders across Northern Ontario, leading initiatives such as a major wayfinding project with Terrace Bay as well as a large-scale research project in partnership with Destination Ontario and FedNor. She spearheaded several marketing campaigns, including episodes for the Northwest on Lindner Media's television series *The Canadian Experience*, and facilitated over eight media familiarization tours to showcase the region. Stephanie also led the activation of the Northern Ontario booth at Rendezvous Canada in Edmonton in May 2024, promoting the area's international market ready experiences. She is excited to collaborate with her colleagues across the North in 2025.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Stephanie is deeply committed to community development and civic engagement. She serves as a director on the Sault Ste. Marie Community Development Corporation, helping to steer local initiatives that foster economic growth and community well-being. Additionally, she holds the role of President for the Economic Developers Council of Ontario, where she contributes her expertise in financial management and strategic planning. Stephanie also chairs both the District of Sault Ste. Marie’s Social Service Administration Board and its Housing Corporation, to oversee vital social services and affordable housing initiatives that improve the lives of residents throughout the region.
Stephanie’s balanced life blends hard work and personal passions. In her spare time, she dedicates herself to volunteering across the province, notably with organizations like the Economic Developers Council of Ontario, the Sault Ste. Marie Community Development Corporation, and the District Social Services Administration Board. Her most cherished moments, however, are those spent with her family. When not working, Stephanie often finds herself in the kitchen, cooking for her loved ones and sharing stories around the dinner table, creating lasting memories with those closest to her.
Stephanie’s career reflects a strong commitment to her community, with a focus on sustainable development, collaboration, and effective communication. Her leadership and deep roots in Northern Ontario continue to shape the region’s growth and success.
